On the outskirts of Victorian London, Blean House Insane Asylum is home to wild, wilful and, frankly, inconvenient women, deposited there by the men in their lives who found them too troublesome to bear.

Nurse Clara knows that something has to give. Embroiling patients Sophia and Alice, the trio must outwit the male doctors and embark on a trail of discovery that has the potential to bring the whole system to its knees.
 

Urgent, electrifyingly relevant and madly witty, this play explores the woeful inadequacies of women’s healthcare, the complexities of a rotten system and the enduring light we can find in the darkest of places.

Calm Down Dear will be performed as a rehearsed reading at Hampstead Theatre (Studio) in May 2026.
